New this year, NAHU is offering a Medicare certification training for agents who’d like to sell 2021 Medicare Advantage and Part D products for the Annual Enrollment Period.

We’ve got all the details on this alternative to AHIP Medicare certification, including why you should consider certifying with NAHU vs. AHIP Medicare certification, below.

What Is NAHU?

NAHU, which stands for The National Association of Health Underwriters, is a professional organization that represents more than 100,000 licensed health insurance agents, brokers, general agents, consultants, and benefit professionals across the United States. According to its site, it is “the only trade organization that represents professional agents and brokers who work with Medicare beneficiaries and Medicare products.” NAHU frequently advocates on behalf of insurance industry professionals with legislators and has many professional development training courses available for agents, brokers, consultants, and benefit administrators.

2021 NAHU Medicare Certification Training

Recently, the broker/agent community already familiar with NAHU’s nationally recognized certification courses, asked NAHU to develop an alternative Medicare Advantage certification to those offered by other providers in years past. NAHU’s board of trustees provided a directive to get this accomplished in 2020, and the organization followed through.

NAHU 2021 Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Compliance Requirements certification training is now available. Agents and brokers can complete this training through the NAHU Online Learning Institute for $125. You don’t have to be a member of NAHU to take the certification, but members enjoy access to additional resources.

2021 NAHU Medicare certification training covers:

  • All CMS Requirements for Medicare Certification
  • The Most Common Compliance Issues Facing Plan Sponsors and Agents
  • Changes in CMS Guidelines
  • Trends in the Marketplace
  • Fraud, Waste & Abuse
  • Medicare Supplement

Agents and brokers should know this training meets all of CMS’ requirements while featuring a streamlined format. However, it is important to note that, while some regional plans are accepting this NAHU Medicare certification for 2021, many big-name carriers will only accept it beginning with next year’s Annual Enrollment Period and beyond. Upon passing the NAHU final exam, agents and brokers receive a certificate of completion that they can upload or transfer to carriers, as well as continuing education (CE) credits. NAHU filed the training for eight CE credits in all 50 states, but is still waiting on some approvals. There are no hidden fees associated with the exam and no additional costs for the CE credits or resources provided.

Why Should Agents Consider Certifying with NAHU vs. AHIP?

While NAHU won’t be accepted by many big-name carriers for 2021, it will be accepted by some regional carriers. Additionally, NAHU expects their Medicare certification training to be accepted by all big-name carriers for 2022 Medicare certification. It’s definitely something to keep in mind as it boasts a lower cost, CE credits at no cost, and a streamlined format.

“NAHU conducts advocacy efforts at the state and federal levels of government to advance health insurance professionals’ interests and promote affordable and responsible private health insurance market solutions,” said Farren Baer, Senior Vice President of Education and Professional Development of NAHU. “Our advocacy efforts drive content for our courses written for agents, by agents, who are also qualified instructors possessing expert knowledge in the principles of instructional design and quality of program delivery in multiple mediums. NAHU’s Benefit Specialist Institute learning library provides a clearinghouse of professional development resources trending throughout an agent’s continued success at each level of their career.”
